Resumen
This paper uses new data sets and a surname matching technique to investigate the e ffect of fi rst-wave Italian migrants' location decisions on the size and location of later-wave migrants, by municipality of origin. Endogeneity is addressed by instrumenting location decisions of first-wave migrants with settlement patterns of non-Italian migrants. Results show that increased proportion of first-wave migrants in counties with greater income leads to additional increases in later-wave migration rates to speci fic counties of destination, but that the mean income of the average first-wave migrant has no e ffect on later-wave emigration rates to the US. In other words, results are consistent with income at destination a ffecting location decisions of later-wave migrants rather than emigration rates to the US as a whole.
